Welcome to My Blog!

Wow. Okay, this is really happening. I have a website with a blog. Cool.

Let's get down to business. My name is Jackie, I'm 20 years old, and an English major. I hope to someday be an English professor, but in the meantime, I need to learn how to cook. I'm no stranger to the kitchen, but I'm more comfortable baking desserts and sweet treats than meals with substance. I hope to use this course not only as an opportunity to better familiarize myself with digital writing, but also as a chance to step out of my comfort zone and learn an important skill. By no means do I aspire to become a culinary master and get my own show on The Food Network, but I do hope to finish this class with the ability to whip up supper. Hence, "SUPPERGIRL" and the various food puns that I plan on distributing throughout this site. (I apologize in advance.)

Fortunately and unfortunately, I still live with my parents who are loving and fun and totally cool (at least to my face) with me still mooching off them, but there's one aspect about our home life that drives me crazy: dinnertime. We've been eating the same dinners for as long as I can remember, rotating between pasta with meat sauce, pork with corn and rice, chicken stir-fry, salmon with green beans, and then whatever leftovers there are from the previous nights. Sure, my dad will occasionally fire up the grill with ribs or hamburgers to break our tedious cycle, but 99 percent of the time we eat the same meals prepared the same way every single week. I'm losing my mind.

So, it's time I do something about this situation. I'm mature enough to use sharp knives, I have access to a car to get to the grocery store, my parents would love a break from schlepping home from work to slave over the stove, and I keep seeing all these cooking videos on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. It's like an omen from Gordon Ramsay!

Personally, I'm a fan of BuzzFeed's Tasty videos, which demonstrate how to cook a full meal in about 45-60 seconds. It seems so easy! So quick! So ~tasty~! But is it realistic? Could a novice truly replicate these recipes, or are these deceitful videos a product of professional chefs, fancy camerawork, and solid marketing?

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we are about to find out. After I figure out which recipe to try, get in my car, go to the store, find and buy the ingredients, return home. . . Gosh, I'm exhausted already.

Either way, stay tuned! Hopefully you'll read about my culinary successes and not a kitchen fire!

Thanks for reading!

-Jackie
